NY Focus Budget Special
|
Jason Dole speaks with Maia Hibbet, Managing Editor of New York Focus, about the ins and outs of the battle over New York's 2023 budget.
Governor Hochul, the Assembly, and the Senate each have different proposals that they are trying to reconcile before the budget deadline this Saturday.
New York Focus has an item-by-item breakdown and comparison of what each side wants.
What are the biggest points of contention? What policies are being fought for, or fought against? And what about the non-profits, advocacy groups, and lobbyists fighting to have their say in the process? And what role does the minority party play?

Memories of a Catskills Entertainer

When people hear the words “show business,” they usually think of the glamour and glory of being on the screen or onstage, and they rarely think of what it takes to pull together everything that precedes the show.

The Kingfisher Project

The Kingfisher Project’s guest is Alexis Pleus, Executive Director for Truth Pharm.
Alexis is a licensed professional engineer with over 25 years of experience in the design and construction industry, has been a corporate trainer for over 20 years and was an adjunct professor for 9 years in the Civil Engineering program at SUNY Broome. The most important role she has had in her life is being the mother of 3 sons. Unfortunately, in 2014, she lost her oldest son Jeff to a heroin overdose and as a result of that experience, founded Truth Pharm, a nonprofit organization with a focus on raising awareness, reducing stigma, educating and advocating to reduce the harms caused by substance use.

"Smokey Belles"
|
Rosie shares her visit to the Delaware River Valley Catskill mountain homestead "Smokey Belles" where community member Anie Stanley taps her trees for maple syrup. Aware that our winter weather has been inconsistent with temperature swings, I wanted to see how the sap was flowing in late February. Anie was sharing the warmth of winter outdoors around an impressive campfire with friends who offered a variety of crock pot chili stews. We walked in the woodland among the moss-covered rocks with sap dripping into buckets while Anie explained her method of tapping her maple trees.

The Kingfisher Project guest with Eve Goldberg, founder, and head of BIGVISION
Eve and Bill were introduced via the Freedom Institute, a private treatment facility in NYC. They had read one of my NY TIMES Op-Ed pieces and asked me to contribute to their online blog which Bill did for a while. Bill also did some theater work with adolescents they were treating.
Eve is a dynamo and has started a very successful organization for young people in recovery. Bill has done some theater/improv workshops with them and plan to do more in the future. Bill participated in some of their other events as well.
Here's a look at their website: https://www.bigvision.nyc

Voices of guests and members of the THCG
|
We'll hear the voices of guests and members of the THCG when we gathered in Narrowsburg in late November. Folks socialized over hot cider and warm food while tending to late seasonal clean up chores, and plant a shared garden bed of garlic for 2023. Invited guest Lois Washer expresses concern for bees and butterflies regarding the use of Neonicotinoids. Loise gifts a pollinator sign to hang on the fence along the pathway. Anie Stanley, Mary Jones, and Elizabeth Green share their experience as active members of the Tusten Heritage Community Garden. The THCG is located on De Mauro Lane, behind the Tusten-Cochecton Branch of the Western Sullivan Public Library Bridge Street Narrowsburg, NY.

The Kingfisher Project returns to The Local Edition 11/1/22 at 6:30 p.m.
The Kingfisher Project guest will be Keri Blakinger.
Listen to Part 2 of our interview with Keri. Keri is an investigative reporter based in Texas. She covers criminal justice and injustice for The Marshall Project and writes “Inside Out,” a regular column published in collaboration with NBC News.
Keri is also the author of her recently published memoir, “Corrections In Ink.”
Before becoming a reporter, she did prison time for a drug crime in New York.
Kirkus Reviews called her book, “A gorgeously written, page-turning memoir about addiction, prison, and privilege.”
