This week on Catskill Character, Saturdays at 11:30 AM, John Erik Karkula of Callicoon, NY. John Erik grew up in a Jehovah’s Witness family and he has lots to say about what that was like. This experience was compounded by the fact that his father, who exhibited sociopathic behavior, kidnapped John Erik and his younger brother and kept him away from his mother for many years. Despite these difficulties, John Erik grew up to have many successes and is never daunted by setbacks. It’s a moving and exciting story.
Please join us Saturday at 11:30 on CATSKILL CHARACTER on Radio Catskill!
Catskill Character is a personality profile show hosted by Donna Fellenberg who speaks with many of the talented and interesting local people in our area, to find out where they’re from, who they are, what they do, and why. Food Bank in New York
|
According to the Associated Press, Food banks across the country are experiencing a critical shortage of volunteers as the omicron variant frightens people away from their usual shifts, and companies and schools that regularly supply large groups of volunteers are canceling their participation over virus fears.
The end result in many cases has been a serious increase in spending by the food banks at a time when they are already dealing with higher food costs due to inflation and supply chain issues.
Radio Catskills Patricio Robayo checked in with the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley to see how they are holding up during the pandemic and spoke with Sara Gunn, Director of the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley.

John Olsen
|
Today on CATSKILL CHARACTER this Saturday, my guest will be John Olsen of Narrowsburg, NY. Originally from Dayton, Ohio and a graduate of Miami University in Ohio, John had a chance encounter with Frederick R. Koch that changed his life forever. John, who's life was anything but dull right up to the moment he met Mr. Koch, was given access to a world he would never have known, through his friendship with Fred.
For the last 15 years of Fred's life, John worked for him as his aide de camp. He's got stories and fond memories of his incredible friend who was a scholarly collector of objects and historic manor houses and frankly, nothing like his brothers David and Charles who were deeply involved in Libertarian politics and the business of fossil fuels.
Fred preferred to support the arts and quietly donated millions of dollars to the arts and historic preservation.

PFAS at the Sullivan County International Airport
|
In 2020, the Sullivan County International Airport became a state Superfund site after two existing Airport wells tested above a new state limit for PFAS chemicals. Since the 1970s until just recently, PFAS were used and required in firefighting foam, and since many airports host firefighter training, many airports have found PFAS in their water.
Three properties near the airport also repeatedly tested above the state limit for PFAS. In November 2021, the airport and the Department of Environmental Conservation started more testing to inform a cleanup plan, which will be available for public input this spring.

2021 Reflection
|
The last few years have been hard. Sometimes, just having someone to listen can help. Call Blackline provides peer support to people impacted by systemic oppression with an LGBTQ+, Black, femme lens.
Originally started as a hotline for reporting mistreatment by police or vigilantes, Call Blackline also provides anonymous crisis counseling. Volunteer Witness listeners learn how to provide support by listening WELLand in fact, thats something we can all do.
Reporter Meg Duff spoke with Vanessa Green, Executive Director of Call Blackline about her work in 2021 and how we can all be better listeners in the new year.

Its almost Thanksgiving...which means many people are thinking ahead to lots, and lots of food. You might be deciding which side dish to bring...or you might be the one planning the BIG shopping list.
Or maybe Thanksgiving feels hard this year...because you cant be with family, or because making a big meal happen...just feels like more than you can handle.
We decided to check in with the Sullivan County Homeless Federation, which works to make sure people get the food and support they need this holiday season...and year round.
Radio Catskills Patricio Robayo spoke to Kathy Kreiter, Director for Sullivan County Federation for the Homeless. Patricio asked her what is planned for this Thanksgiving season.

When the Sullivan County Human Rights Commission Executive Director stepped down in fall 2019, the part-time position was not repostedand stayed vacant for more than a year. In the meantime, the Sullivan county legislature was re-thinking how the commission should operate.
This February, the county legislature passed a new law restructuring the human rights commission...a new director started in March...in June, committee members joined...and the committee met together for the first time last month. Their next meeting is coming up this Thursday.

Bus Driver Shortage...
|
Last week was the first day back at school... or the *first* the first day of school! for many students around New York State. But some students who wanted to go to school ...were stranded.
26 million students rely on the school bus to get to school. But schools around the country... are facing a growing school bus driver shortage.
Recently, Pine Bush Central School District in Orange County found out right before the first day of school last Wednesday... that some students would not get rides. On Friday and Monday, they closed schools for all students while they adjusted schedules. Today, the busses are finally rolling, and school is back in session! But the shortage remains.
Nick Vallone is vice president of the State School Bus Contractors Association and Executive vice president of Rolling V Bus Corp.

"Going to campus yesterday was absolutely terrifying"
|
Leigh joined 309 students, staff and community members in signing a petition calling for the college to allow professors to take steps to minimize the number of students in classrooms, decrease risk and create more safety protocols in classrooms. She had her first class this past Tuesday. With a small classroom and 35 students, there was no space for social distancing, so she held her class outside from the back of her Subaru. "Going to campus yesterday was absolutely terrifying, I did not feel safe in my classroom. I'm so anxious and traumatized by the way these concerns are being handled." As a mother of a 1-year-old, she is worried about spreading the virus to her unvaccinated daughter.
